![]() Even Klassen’s illustrations revel in the art of the deadpan, giving us a menagerie of animal characters with stony, nearly unchanging faces. Named as one of the New York Times best illustrated children’s books of 2011, I Want My Hat Back is a masterpiece of understated, slow-burn humor. And, if you’re looking for an example of that kind of book, you can hardly do better than I Want My Hat Back by Jon Klassen. ![]() ![]() ![]() Funny books do a particularly good job of teaching children about those subtle underlying language rules, and I love watching my daughter realize on her own that, even though a character is seemingly saying one thing, you can infer through the context of the illustrations and the intonation of how the line might be read that the character actually MEANS something completely different. One of my favorite things about reading books to my daughter is that, through the process of reading out loud, she learns so much about not just language, but also things like intonation, context, sarcasm, and all of those other glorious abstractions that come hand-in-hand with verbal communication. ![]()

Women tend to come home from the battlefield and say nothing and go on with their lives. In war, women’s stories are all too often forgotten or overlooked. And sometimes, perhaps, we don’t want to know what we would do to survive. In love we find out who we want to be in war we find out who we are. That question is at the very heart of The Nightingale. ![]() I found myself consumed with a single, haunting question, as relevant today as it was seventy years ago: When would I, as a wife and mother, risk my life-and more importantly, my child’s life– to save a stranger? Her story-one of heroism and danger and unbridled courage-inspired me to imagine the women in that world. But when research on World War II led me to the story of a young Belgian woman who had created an escape route out of Nazi-Occupied France, I was hooked. In truth, I did everything I could not to write this novel. Translations of a text that has been present for millennia encounter the problem of missing portions and incomplete manuscripts: translators encounter a degradation of the actual physical text as well as a loss of meaning imbued only by specific historical context. ![]() ![]() ![]() In this second installment, Tristan is forced back to Alke, the magical land of African Gods and African American folk heroes, after his beloved Nana is taken hostage by a mysterious villain out for revenge.
